Borroloola to Roper Bar

The track from Borroloola to Roper Bar is impassable in the WET and soon after one is not sure what the surface will be like.   However it is a much more interesting trip , and shorter  than going back out to the bitumen , then north, then east.
The attraction  for us was the possibility of fishing for barra at the many streams that one crosses.  If you get there early enough in the season, you will find plenty of camp spots, without other people.
We found such a spot on the banks of the Limmen Bight River.....high enough to be away from crocs and yet  close enough to   watch their activity.
There were plenty of bait fish and my son, David, accidentally caught a barra in our bait net(see pictures).  The fish responded well to both lures and bait and we ate well for many days.
The track was fair to good  with parts washed away in the recent rains.   The approaches to the Towns River were  washed away and took some negotiating,  ......but with those washed out, what was the surface like under water ?
While we were contemplating wading in, to  test the depth and nature of the bottom, we spotted a pair of eyes on the surface of the water about 20 metres out.  (See photo of Dave on the crossing.)
So, it was bite the bullet and hope that the surface was still driveable...........but the Pajero got us through...........and on to Roper Bar for some more Barra

Mitsubishi Pajero We have had 4 Pajeros and using those, have managed to fill in most of our map of Australia. Our last Pajero (NP) has had five years of beach work as we have an Orchid Beach, Fraser Island house. The Pajero towed many heavy loads along the beach and over the soft track at Indian Head without being bogged......but of course having tyres at 15psi is helpful.Having a property there necessitates a visit every 2 to 3 weeks, so we get to know the changes in beach configuration and the soft tracks. Now we have traded the Pajero on a 2009 diesel Triton and it seems to thrive in the soft stuff as well.
