Instead of camels the 2010 Burke and Wills Environmental Expedition is using two Mitsubishi Pajeros to travel from Melbourne to the Gulf of Carpentaria to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the original 1860 exploring party which was the first to cross the continent of Australia. “Having used the Pajero to cross Australia myself on family trips since the nineteen eighties, I know they are reliable”, Dr. Jonathan King, the expedition leader told journalists on August 20. This was the date the team departed from Melbourne’s Royal Park, 150 years to the day that Burke and Wills left...

As soon as our two dust-covered Pajeros got to Broken Hill the locals rolled out the red carpet. We had received a very warm welcome in Menindee from Margot Muscat and the locals who had shared their Burke and Wills historical stories and told us about their environmental concerns and solutions. We did not think we could get a better welcome – especially after Ky Crow and Gill the camel carers had entertained us at their camel farm near Copi Hollow. Ky and Gill even allowed us to film the birth of a calf, Chukka, which we visited their Noah’s...

The Mitsubishi supported Burke and Wills Environmental Expedition, is going from strength to strength thanks to the mighty Pajeros. They are getting the modern day explorers through heavy rains, muddy tracks, howling winds and bumpy unmade roads. Although the expedition was stuck at Pooncarie south of Menindee for some days waiting for a series of sunny days to dry out the gravel roads, the persistent crew pushed on to Burke’s first big base camp at Menindee and beyond. Not that the wait was boring in Pooncarie because Macca contacted them by their Telstra satellite phone and...

A Brief History In 1860-61 Robert O'Hara Burke and William John Wills led an expedition of 19 men with the intention of crossing Australia from Melbourne in the south to the Gulf of Carpentaria in the north, a distance of around 3,250 kilometres. At that time, these regions of Australia had not been explored by the European settlers, and were almost completely unknown. The expedition set off from Royal Park in Melbourne on August 20th 1860, watched by around 15,000 spectators. There were 19 members of the expedition party, including five Englishmen, four Indian sepoys, three Germans and an...

Expedition Recreation Historian and author Jonathan King is organising the Burke and Wills 150th-anniversary Environmental Expedition. With help of actor and environmentalist Jack Thompson, the trekking team will be undertaking a two-stage expedition, with specialist environmentalists using detailed maps, to follow the infamous 1860 route (this time aided by Pajero four-wheel-drives). The journey is being made under the auspices of the Royal Society of Victoria, which organised the original 1860 trek. The expedition aims to assess the damage that has been caused across the route throughout 150 years of exploitation, and find ways to...

Pajero’s Involvement The Burke and Wills Expedition 2010 will have a few distinct advantages over their 1860 counterparts. On one front, they will be actively seeking help from Indigenous Australians along the track, something that the first trekkers failed to do. But apart from that, the 2010 team will also be utilizing two Mitsubishi Pajeros to aid them in their travels. These vehicles will help carry the party’s equipment, and assist with some of the tougher sections of the trip. The two Pajeros will have the 3.2L Common Rail Turbo Diesel engines and Super Select 4WD with...
