Ben Beeton has been creating digital art about the ecology, geology and deep time history of Australia’s diverse environments since 2006. Immersed within these themes are elements that highlight humanities presence within the environment. Through his exploration of both scientific and artistic perspectives Benoverlaps the macrocosms and microcosms of landscape and reflects on how they have altered through time.

Through work with Eric Myhill, Ben wishes to create an art/science and culture interactive website for the Burke and Wills environment project. With the overarching objective of creating an exciting educational tool for the schools the website will feature approximately 13 online interactive artworks. Each artwork will focus on a different leg of the journey. The interactive elements of the website will be a series of hyperlinks that will appear on the artworks which will be linked to the data generated by the expedition highlighting environmental and cultural issues.

Ben has also invited John Howland to collaborate with him in creating a series of animations that will factually depict where selected endangered species. These animations will be featured as part of the interactivity of the artworks.

Burke and Wills

Mitsubishi Pajero Historian and author Jonathan King is organising the Burke and Wills 150th-anniversary Environmental Expedition. With help of actor and environmentalist Jack Thompson, the trekking team will be undertaking a two-stage expedition, with specialist environmentalists using detailed maps, to follow the infamous 1860 route (this time aided by Pajero four-wheel-drives). Throughout the journey they will be posting updates from the road; providing a running commentary, stories, video blogs, artwork and other findings as they retrace the legendary steps, beginning in late August. Keep track of 4WD4Life to keep abreast of this epic journey!
