Getting through the winter
Frosty weather, red wine, cosying up near the fireplace... In some parts of Australia, winter wonderlands offer the best adventures – as long as you’re prepared. Winter is the season when driving a four-wheel drive car really pays off. In wet, snowy or icy conditions, where grip is everything, 4x4s like the Pajero have an immense advantage over ‘regular’ cars. But people often forget that a few simple things can enhance your safety even further.
First and foremost: tyres. Few people seem to realise that when the thermometer falls below 7°C (45°F), the rubber compound of their tyres progressively hardens and freezes, resulting in the loss of dramatic amounts of traction. The solution if you live in one of Australia’s coldest regions: winter tyres. Their compound is different, minimising the hardening effect. The tread pattern, and the width and depth of the treads are also different, and much better suited for wet and cold conditions.
Winter tyres increase your grip while braking or cornering enormously. Trust us: they’re not just for ski trips, not even just for when it’s freezing. They make a vital difference when the temperature drops. Your Mitsubishi dealer is glad to help you further. Other simple tips: keep your car clean. Not just your windscreen – dirt also reduces the amount of light emitted from the headlights considerably. And when in the ski-fields, remember to clear your car of all the snow, including the roof – it might not hinder you, but it might cause problems for the people driving behind you if the wind blows it off.
And last but not least: be sure to check the state of your car’s battery, ensure there is anti-freeze agent in both the washer fluid and radiator and always check the oil and washer fluid level before driving off.
