The Gulf Savannah region extends from the Great Dividing Range in the east to the Northern Territory border in the west. The Gulf Savannah region is a country of golden grasslands abounding with wildlife, mining heritage, great rivers and stunning outback landscapes. Try your hand at gem fossicking, enjoy amazing fishing, view the incredible diversity of bird life and wildlife or experience the preserved history of frontier towns. The Gulf Savannah is an interesting region to visit all year. However during the monsoon season, transportation methods must be carefully considered, as...

Spanning 1,012,000 hectares in the arid outback, this is Queensland's largest protected area. Parallel wind-blown sand dunes dominate the landscape. Some extend 200 kilometres and reach 90 metres high. Saltpans and gibber-ironstone flats occupy interdunal areas. More than 180 species of birds, including the Eyrean grasswren, and numerous mammals and reptiles live in the park.       Be sure to visit Big Red, the largest sand dune. At Poeppels Corner, attempt to stand in two states and a territory at once. Camp and admire the expansive night sky and make sure you take binoculars and a...

Located on the northernmost tip of Australia, Cape York Peninsula is a wild and sparsely populated wilderness area that is only accessible during the dry months from April to December.        The seemingly undeveloped land of Cape York will surprise and delight. The dusty tracks contrast dramatically with the abundant rivers, crystal clear creeks and spectacular waterfalls. This is a vast area of unexplored wilderness, magnificent national parks, sacred Aboriginal sites, unexplored rainforest, rugged mountains and swampy marshlands. This is a land of climatic extremes where the creeks run dry or ten feet high....

With Mount Buller’s close proximity to Melbourne, heading over for a day trip is a viable plan. More than 20 years after leaving the small seaside town of Streaky Bay as an eight year old, my wife and I headed over the other side of the Eyre Peninsula to visit. It hasn’t changed too much other than generally being tidied up – it could win a tidy town award if they still run them. After a year of work it was an ideal place to unwind. We went via Port Lincoln where we stayed for a few days (see my other stories on these destinations), and broke up the drive a bit by looking at some of...

The trainer for three-time Melbourne Cup winner Makybe Diva comes from Port Lincoln and there is a bronze statue of Makybe on the park on the town's foreshore. Gunyah Beach is a great surf fishing beach. There is a 4WD only track to get to the beach. When we ventured down there there was only one other car on the beach with a couple of blokes fishing. Other than that we had the beach to ourselves. That's one of the great things of having a 4WD is the remote places you can...

There's a couple of minor water crossings on the beach- watch them after heavy rain though as these can become deep and catch you off guard.
