Fraser Island
Fraser Island
Fraser Island is the world’s largest sand island, stretching over 123 kilometres in length and 22 kilometres at its widest point.
In 1992 Fraser Island was declared World Heritage Listed ranking it along side Australia’s Uluru, Kakadu and the Great Barrier Reef.
Fraser Island is a place of spectacular beauty with more than 100 fresh water lakes, striking sand dunes and rainforests on sand. The rainforests have trees which exceed 200m in height and provide amazing wildflower displays during the summer and spring seasons.
Fraser Island is home to the longest coastal dune system in the work and it still growing. The highest dunes are even 240 metres above sea level.
It’s also home to some of the world’s more rare and endangered species including turtles, dugongs, Illidge’s ant-blue butterflies and eastern curlews.
Fishing is one of the most popular activities in Fraser Island, the ocean beaches of the eastern coast being the most popular. If you’re a keen fisher we recommend you attend the annual fishing competition which runs on the Island for a full week.
